From the Vicar
Welcome back! We last gathered together in person on Sunday 15th August, a full 6 weeks ago. I’m aware that many have been back into work and commerce for a few weeks now, but I’m also aware that for some this will be the first significant gathering together for 42 days. So, let us be aware of each other’s need for space and time to adjust as we reconnect.
It has also been 42 days since we’ve celebrated communion as a community. As the adage goes, absence makes the heart grow fonder, and I’m very aware personally how much I have missed the particular rhythm and grace of the sacrament of Holy Communion. I pray that as we partake of it this morning, even in one-kind only and from a masked-up vicar, we might be struck afresh by the layers of grace held in this ritual. In this act we connect with God as well as with believers through time and space. And we connect more deeply with ourselves, knowing our need for forgiveness and the delight God has in bestowing that forgiveness on us through his service at the last supper and his sacrifice on the cross.
Whilst we have wrestled with the limitations of lockdown (and in some ways still do!), it also presents some gifts to us. One such gift is the digitising and free sharing of a number of events that might otherwise be missed by us. There are some great sermons, church services, and lectures available online. Can I particularly recommend the following if you have the time and inclination
The Hope Seminar: A Rocha and Eco Church organised a wellbeing and climate change on Sunday 19 Sept at the Transitional Cathedral. A variety of speakers and perspectives were presented but all aimed at keeping the korero going, quietening our spirit about climate change fear and bringing hope to the conversation. It is available to watch on the Cathedral’s YouTube page
May God be with you all
