Live by Faith

I recall a friend of my father’s, a man whom I admired very much as a sincere and practical Christian, once saying that he would like to know if he had been the means by which someone came to faith.

I don’t know if he ever found out if he had done so, but I know that many people were encouraged in their faith by his example and that his conduct in his professional life was in itself a witness to the faith by which he lived.

The parable that Jesus told about the growing seed, speaks of the need for the seed to be scattered and then left to grow. All we can do is to spread the seed of our faith and trust that growth will follow, a growth that it may be the task of someone else to encourage and to harvest. And, indeed, I think that probably most of us will be able to name someone who had an influence on our own lives – and that we have not always been able to let that person know just what it meant to have their words and example of a faith-filled life at that time in our lives.

We can give thanks for them - and for those who continue to encourage us - while accepting the challenge to live by faith and not by sight (to quote St Paul).
