Saint Anne’s Magnificat

Simon Gathercole, "The Apocryphal Gospels"

Devotional traditions of Saint Anne derive from the condemned "Proto-Gospel" (Protoevangelium) of James. In this work Saint Anne has a magnificat of her own:

I will sing a sacred song to the Lord my God

for he has visited me

and removed my enemies' insults from me.

The Lord my God has given me

the fruit of his righteousness

unique yet manifold before him.

Who is to declare to the sons of Reuben

that Anna is nursing a child?

Hear, hear, O twelve tribes of Israel -

that Anna is nursing a child!
