Passiontide
Last Sunday following the Holy Eucharist (and the fire evacuation drill!) we had our AGM. On behalf of us all, I sincerely thank those who have given themselves to serve this community as Warden, Treasurer or Vestry member.
This Sunday we celebrate the 5th Sunday in Lent. This Sunday also traditionally marked the start of a special sub-season, Passiontide, within the season of Lent. Beginning this Sunday it continues through to Holy Saturday. During this time the Church’s liturgy is somber and empresses a sorrowful mood as we focus more intently on the coming crucifixion of Christ. Christ’s anointing for future suffering, as the cross looms closer. Next Sunday, the liturgical combination of the Passion and Palm liturgies emphasises the Palm procession and also reinforces the Passion narrative that we proclaim on that day.
This Sunday’s Psalm (126), most likely comes from the time of captivity and exile. All the captives would have had to draw on, would have been their memories and dreams. It is a psalm of amazing hope rising from the depths of despair. This is our psalm of hope, as we continue our Lenten journey. Our hope as we think of our restoration from that we are exiled from. “May those who sow in tears reap with shouts of joy. Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, carrying their sheaves.”
God Bless

This Sunday, the 4th Sunday of Lent the Gospel reading is that of the Prodigal Son, that great parable that gives us enormous hope and much to ponder.
In early medieval times it was called the “Annunciation of the Lord” or the “Conception of Christ,” indicating its focus as a festival of the Lord.
