Sidetracked from our deeper purposes
“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone”.
This is verses eleven and twelve of psalm 91 that encourages us to trust in God ever so deeply that we will be placed back on our feet when we stumble. As we hear elsewhere in the Psalms it is the broad wings of a loving God under which we live. The image of the gentle feathers that are peaceful and gentle but also strong, able to shed the wind and rain of the world.
But it is in the sixth verse of the same psalm that we hear of “the destruction that wastes at noonday”. This is referring to what the desert mothers and fathers of the 4th century knew as spiritual listlessness. This can happen when the busyness of life causes us to be sidetracked from our deeper purposes. Although we may struggle in the darkness with our spiritual life at the times of tragedy, this is a psalm that warns of the danger when we are at the noonday of our lives, brightly lit and with nowhere to hide.
It is wonderful to have the children and families of Waka Puhara with us this Sunday, as we give thanks and praise to our God who gives us shelter from both rain and sun and picks us up when we stumble.
From the Vicar
“May the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Love of God and the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all. Amen” (NZPB p52).
Will we make the choice to live as those who love the way of God and therefore find the depth, refreshment from the true source of life? Or do we choose a life of being blown around in the breeze avoiding the true source of life that provides us with rootedness, security and life?
Isaiah has been called by God to bring the people to account for their actions. They had turned away from God and that was being shown in how they were treating their brothers and sisters. Isaiah recognises his own faults and he is forgiven by God.
